In a bid to limit the involvement of middlemen in the agriculture sector, Indian District Collector O Anand has urged officials to issue licenses to Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs). Addressing a meeting with officials from various departments including Agriculture, NABARD, Fisheries, DRDA and Horticulture, Anand stated that farmers have been deprived of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their yields due to middlemen involvement in the purchasing of paddy.
Anand added that middlemen have also been exploiting farmers in relation to the purchase of seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, instruments etc. He said that to tackle this issue, the government has decided to issue licences to the FPOs so that farmers can negotiate transactions independently. The Collector pointed out that 62 FPOs have already been registered under the Companies Act-19 in the district, and urged the FPOs to renew their licenses before August 15th. Officials have been directed to supply the FPOs with seeds, pesticides and fertilisers once their licenses have been renewed.
Anand further instructed officials to organise a special drive to educate farmers on the benefits of FPO registration.
