16,000 families of Karedu village in Ulavapadu, Nellore District, are protesting against the Andhra Pradesh Government's allocation of 8,348 acres of fertile land to Indosol Solar Private Limited for a large-scale renewable energy project. The land in question is used for multiple-crop farming and aquaculture and feeds the families and drives the local economy. The villagers argue that the state government has bypassed legal requirements such as public consultations and Gram Sabha approvals and violated the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act, 2013. Furthermore, they argue that the infrastructure could be located on non-cultivable land to avoid displacement and harm to the ecosystem. The most fertile lands and water tanks will remain untouched, says Nellore collector O. Anand, who added that the government is engaging with locals and will proceed only with voluntary consent.
