Eyebrows are raising in Tirupati as the District Consumer Court of Nellore fines Medicover Hospital, formerly Simhapuri Hospital, a staggering Rs.61.62 lakh for medical negligence that resulted in catastrophic complications.Chevuru Suresh Babu, a local panchayat secretary, underwent sinusitis surgery at the hospital in 2017 but suffered total loss of vision in his left eye and severe complications affecting his head and brain. Babu was admitted to Apollo Brain & Spine Hospitals in Chennai, where he had to undergo multiple surgeries to correct the damage. He subsequently filed a case against Medicover Hospital, alleging medical negligence. While the hospital denied the charge, crucial medical records proving otherwise were absent, alarming the court.Judge Ginka Reddy Sekhar determined that Medicover had indeed been negligent and ordered the hospital to pay Rs.21,62,752.49 for the victim's medical expenses and Rs.40 lakh as compensation for his physical and mental suffering. An additional Rs.5,000 has been levied for the case costs. The hospital has been given 45 days to comply, failure of which will incur an annual 9% interest on the amount. This devastating case has shed light on the critical issue of rising medical negligence and the need for stricter accountability in healthcare.
