The respective Municipal Corporations of Ongole and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh have initiated works to clear drain blockages in preparation for the monsoon season.
Ongole Municipal Corporation has begun a five-division, five-to-six-day special sanitation drive as per the instructions of MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao.
Using heavy machinery, they are spending Rs1.6 crore to desilt drainages of a 105km distance, with completion expected by 5 June.
Nellore Municipal Corporation has undertaken a programme to desilt all the canals, which have been unpaved for a long time due to ramps, to make them suitable for irrigation.
They are spending Rs1.72 crore for this, with Rs5 crore spent on major drains and Rs2 crore on minor drains, with works expected to be completed by 15 July.
Unlike other districts in the state, Nellore receives seasonal rainfall from North-East Monsoon during October-December, with the district currently experiencing early South-West monsoon rains.
The monsoon has already caused some streets in the city to face sanitation problems, which the Nellore Municipal Corporation swiftly monitored.
