After years of delay, the Sangam and Nellore barrages, irrigation projects started over a decade ago in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The projects, which were started during Dr. YSR's regime, faced several delays and were criticized by farmers for the prolonged completion. However, recent developments have sped up the works, and officials expect the projects to benefit around 1 lakh acres of farmland.
The Nellore anicut, constructed by the British in 1862-63, will now be able to irrigate double its original area with the addition of these new projects. The Mekapati Goutham Reddy Sangam Barrage, named after the late minister M Goutham Reddy, is expected to enhance water flow and storage.
Officials reported that the state government spent Rs. 131 crore on the Sangam Barrage and Rs. 77 crore on the Nellore barrage during the last three years to complete the pending works. This long-awaited event will benefit the local farmers and economy of Nellore, boosting the ruling party's popularity in the district.
