Fake Officer, Real Arrest

Tirupati police arrested a 23-year-old conman from Karnataka, who posed as an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, from Nellore district on Sunday. The accused, Rampur Ramesh, targeted locals and temple officials by offering to resolve land disputes.

On June 3, Ramesh contacted a local resident, Venkataramana, claiming that he could mediate Venkataramana's land dispute for Rs 2 lakh. But when Venkataramana stopped responding to his calls, Ramesh decided to take his scam to the Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy temple.

At the temple, Ramesh introduced himself to the temple executive officer Alla Srinivasulu Reddy as an IRS officer on deputation, tasked with addressing tax and land disputes. The EO trusted him and shared scanned copies of the disputed land records.

Ramesh used a car to impersonate a government official, reinforcing his bluff. But when the EO requested a personal meeting to discuss the land issues, it triggered suspicion. The EO verified with government officials and confirmed that no IRS officer named Rampur Ramesh was posted in Nellore.

Alerted by this, the Santhapeta police led by CI G Dasaradha Rama Rao arrested Ramesh near Aditya Nagar and recovered fake IDs, a car, and two mobile phones from the conman.

Ramesh has been remanded to judicial custody. And though his car may be classified as official, his designation certainly isn't.
