Young brothers 'did not realize the depth or strength of currents'

Tirupati: A pair of teen siblings drowned on Monday while swimming in a reservoir in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The brothers, identified as Venkata Chandu, 15, and Venkata Nanda Kishore, 13, went for a leisure swim in the Kanigiri reservoir in Nellore district.

"The brothers were sons of Banda Govindayya and Seshamma, residents of NTPS Colony near Chinnapadugupadu in Kovur Mandal. They went to Sangam to visit their relatives," a statement by the police said.

On Monday afternoon, the duo ventured into the canal for a swim but were unaware of the strong currents and the increased depth due to the release of water into the Kanigiri reservoir, the statement added.

The brothers were swept away within minutes of entering the water, and their bodies were retrieved by police from the reservoir, it said.

A case has been registered, and the bodies were shifted for post-mortem, it added.
