Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Warns Center Over Almatti Dam Height

Only a few months after the devastating floods, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has warned the Center about Karnataka's plan to increase the height of the Almatti dam, arguing that the move may further worsen floods in Maharashtra's downstream districts. The dam, built on the River Krishna, is a major hydroelectric project, and raising its height would increase its reservoir capacity.

However, Fadnavis argues that doing so would adversely affect those living in Maharashtra. In a letter to PM Modi, he requested the Center to reconsider the move, emphasizing that the decision will impact over 2000 residents of Maharashtra who were rehabilitated after the Supreme Court's order in 2006.

The controversy has sparked tensions between the two states, emphasizing the delicate flood-management issues in the region.

The plan to raise the dam's height is projected to disrupt the natural flow of the river, and the enormous water stored in the reservoir would take longer to drain during heavy rainfall, hence exacerbating the flooding in the downstream regions.

Fadnavis requests the Center to intervene and consider the consequences of this decision on behalf of the people of Maharashtra and find a sustainable solution for the region.
