Vice-Presidential Election Scheduled, After Dhankhars Resignation

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the vice-presidential election will be held on September 9 to fill the vacancy left by Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned in July.

The election will take place between 10 am and 5 pm and will be counted the same day.

The announcement, which was expected, comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his council of ministers declined to recommend any candidates for the post of vice president on August 27, making it necessary for the election to be held.

According to the press trust of India, the ECI announcement came shortly after the term of outgoing vice president Dhankhar ended officially at midnight on August 11, unleashing the months of the election process of the next vice president.

Dhankhar, a former senator from Jharkhand, resigned from his post in July, nearly a year after he swore in as India's first senator to hold the posts of both the vice president and Rajya Sabha member.

His resignation came a day after he criticized the government's handling of the Pegasus spyware scandal, saying it was a "big issue" that needed to be resolved.

"I have resigned from my post as I want to be relieved from my obligations and duties as the vice president so that I can focus on my political career and serve the people of India to the best of my ability," said Dhankhar.

The upcoming election will be the 17th vice-presidential election since the Constitution was amended in 1962, creating the post of vice president.

So far, three people have been elected to the post of vice president, they are: Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan (196267), Zakir Husain (196769), and V. V. Giri (196974).

The vice-presidential election will be held simultaneously with the elections to the Rajya Sabha and the legislative councils of six states.

These include the polls to the Maharashtra legislative council and the Rajasthan legislative council, also scheduled for September 9, 2022.

The ECI said in a statement that if necessary, the elections would be held in more phases.

It is expected that the nomination process will begin on August 27 and end on August 30, with September 3 being the last date for the withdrawal of nominations.

The ECI has said that it will organize the elections "in a safe and secure manner, with all necessary precautions and safety measures," in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

With the election only a few weeks away, all eyes are on the candidates who will be competing for the country's second-highest civilian office.

Only time will tell who will emerge victorious and be sworn in as the next vice president of India.
