How Coca-Cola's 'premium' Dasani bottled water, made from ordinary tap water, turned into a public scandal and a hefty expense for the British public.
Londoners laughing at Coca-Cola's branded Dasani water is now a reality after the beverage giant pulled out of the multi-million-pound contract to supply Heathrow Airport with water following a scandal. After spending crores on a brand extension that never resonated with British consumers, Coke pulled the plug and decided to halt production of the much-mocked beverage.
Dasani, marketed as water purified with advanced technology and added minerals, was simply ordinary tap water repackaged as a premium product sold at a significant premium price. In the wake of the fiasco, the British public has now dumped the bottled water in favor of cheaper alternatives, leaving Coke with millions in losses and a valuable lesson in brand extension gone wrong.
The pullout resulted from a decision made by the British Infrastructure Ministry to stop purchasing Dasani, saving taxpayer money and focusing on the more affordable options for the country's hydration needs.
Coke hoped to capitalize on the popularity of bottled water in the UK, but it hasn't quite worked out that way leaving Dasani, quite literally, on the shelf.
