'Murder in daylight' amid DMK government's inefficiency, claims OPS

Breaking the routine of press conferences and roadshows, former chief minister O. Panneerselvam has, for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began, addressed the public from his home in Theni on Sunday, strongly attacking the DMK government for what he termed the lawless state of the Union territory of Puducherry and the state of Tamil Nadu.

Beginning his address, Mr. Panneerselvam, who was also former deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu, blamed the DMK for the 'disappearance' of the law and order situation in the state, citing the murder of Tiruppur policeman Salem Balachandran by the LTTE-inspired gang of criminals earlier this month.

Mr. Panneerselvam charged that during the past four years of the DMK government, murder in daylight, dacoity, circulation of illegal drugs, sexual assaults, among others have become daily affairs, he charged in his statement.

He criticized the government for refusing to admit that such crimes were on the rise and warned that the lawlessness would only worsen if the government did not act immediately to strengthen the law and order.

"I urge the DMK government to immediately enact effective measures to alleviate the sense of fear growing among the people," he said.

Mr. Panneerselvam concluded his address by demanding the resignation of the Puducherry chief minister for what he described as 'condoning' the brutal murder.

"It is impossible to restore peace without removing those responsible for this deterioration in law and order," he said.
