Shocking words today from the Arab world's newest peacemakers. Egypt's foreign minister, on a visit to Greece, has described the international response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza as "shameful."

According to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Sameh Shoukry, who was in Greece for talks with his counterpart Nikos Dendias, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Gaza, which has been bombarded by Israeli military forces in response to missile attacks.

An estimated 53 Palestinians have been killed, including 17 children, and more than 500 injured, according to the latest UN figures.

"I emphasize that the Egyptian stance is closely following the dangerous developments in Gaza and is keen to address the repercussions of the current crisis," Shoukry said.

"The prevailing international silence and insufficient action is shameful and goes against the values of human rights and humanitarianism," he went on.

His words were echoed by Qatar's foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, who expressed his "disappointment and surprise" at the US' muted response to Israel's actions.
