The young batsman has revealed that he has had a chat with Gautam Gambhir who has helped him "tremendously" in preparing for a potential national debut.
Gambhir, who is now a Member of Parliament, is reportedly mentoring the next generation of cricketers and has played a key role in helping Abhimanyu Easwaran find his way onto the Indian national team.
The 30-year-old Easwaran, who comes from Bengal, has been included in India's ODI squad for the West Indies series set to begin later in February. While Easwaran is yet to make his international debut, he has scored 7,841 runs in 103 first-class matches and was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in the Indian Premier League for a couple of years since 2016.
In recent conversations with Gambhir, Easwaran has related that the veteran ex-cricketer has given him helpful advice on how to approach his batting and indeed his entire approach to the game.
Easwaran said that Gambhir gave him the confidence to believe that he belongs at the level and urged him to not try and prove himself to everyone, but just to focus on his own game.
With the likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Shikhar Dhawan all part of the ODI squad for the series and likely to be batting staples for India for the foreseeable future, Easwaran's chances of making his debut look slim indeed. But if he does get a chance to bat, perhaps the lessons he learned from Gambhir will help him shine.
