A bizarre scene played out in a Delhi court today after a man apparently disrupted proceedings by sprinkling rice onto his head and onto the desk of the judge. The bizarre act caused proceedings to be stalled for nearly 15-20 minutes as officials cleaned up the rice, while the accused pleaded guilty and assured the court that he would not repeat such behaviour.
It is not clear why the man, who was appearing before the Saket Court in south Delhi, opted to throw rice inside the courtroom. Some reports claim the man was upset over being made to attend the hearing via video conference despite being physically present in the court, while others claim he is an 'annoying' repeat offender who was appearing for using foul language and spitting in public.
Despite the bizarre nature of the incident, the judge decided to drop the case against the man, who pleaded guilty and apologised for his behaviour. After the court proceedings resumed, fellow attendees were seen laughing and shaking their heads at the bizarre incident.
The incident reminds us of a couple of similar, bizarre incidents over the last year. Who can forget the petrol pump attendant in Gujarat who allegedly refused to accept payment for petrol filled by a woman, asking instead for 'favours' from her. More recently, a man clad in a black gown stormed the National Commission for Women office in New Delhi, declaring himself to be a 'lawyer' and demanding to see the commissioner. For now, this bizarre incidence of 'black magic' in court will have to suffice.
