In a recent initiative to strengthen child protection in schools, the Cyberabad Police have introduced the concept of Safety Clubs. These clubs are designed to safeguard students from physical, emotional, and digital threats. During a meeting held at the Cyberabad Commissionerate, attended by school principals, representatives, and senior police officials, crucial issues such as bullying, drug abuse, cyber threats, and sexual harassment were addressed.
The Safety Clubs will operate across four main areas:
1. Physical safety
2. Cyber safety
3. Drug abuse prevention
4. Mental health support
Each category will be led by trained faculty members and Balamitra teachers, with regular safety activities organized by the clubs. Together, the clubs will strive to enforce child protection.
During the meeting, DCP Dr. Vineeth G emphasized the importance of involving students in decision-making processes regarding their safety. He urged schools to adopt a child-centric approach, encouraging them to listen to student concerns and create safe spaces for reporting issues. He raised concern over the increase in child suicides, bullying cases, substance abuse, and sexual exploitation in schools.
To ensure a safer environment in schools, several protocols will be implemented:
- A zero-tolerance policy against ragging and bullying
- Strict monitoring of vulnerable areas including hostels and transportation
- Schools will be held accountable if drugs are found on campus, and any cases involving minors will be handled under the Juvenile Justice Act, focusing on rehabilitation
- An emphasis on sexual harassment awareness, with staff being trained to accurately report and disclose any cases
- Teachers and parents are to be vigilant for signs of emotional distress, sudden decreases in academic performance, or unexplained injuries
Schools are to comply with national safety guidelines, drafting School Safety Plans, holding regular PTA and safety committee meetings, staff training, and the inclusion of safety education in the curriculum.
The Cyberabad Police remain committed to creating a secure, abuse-free, and supportive environment for children in partnership with schools and the community.
This initiative ensures that authorities are taking concrete measures to protect the vulnerable section of students and create a safe environment that fosters learning and growth.
Let's ensure we're doing our bit to keep our schools and children safe!
