Drug crisis impact is local, and Midland is joining a global campaign to bring attention to the problem and provide support for those impacted.
The Simcoe Muskoka Drug Strategy group wants to bring attention to the global crisis of drug overdose, and they're inviting the public to join them in remembering those who have died and calling for action to change this epidemic. The gathering will take place on Aug. 27 and is being held in conjunction with International Overdose Awareness Day, a global campaign that aims to bring attention to the issue of overdose and promote drug policy reform.
Although the crisis is global, it hits close to home in Simcoe Muskoka, where opioid-related deaths have been significantly higher than the provincial average since 2017. In 2024, 113 members of the community died of opioid-related overdoses. Although the numbers are high, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit believes that prevention strategies and harm reduction approaches have the potential to turn the tide on this public health crisis.
The Aug. 27 event will be held at the Midland Public Library from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All members of the community are invited to remember and reflect on the tragedy of losing loved ones, and to strengthen the collective voice calling for change.
