News hit the wires on Monday that officials spotted "about a dozen" drones along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch, Jammu & Kashmir, hovering over forward areas. The drones, believed to be launched for surveillance, were seen flying high from Pakistan and returned within five minutes.
A search operation was launched as authorities are increasingly concerned about the possibility of air-dropping weapons or narcotics.
This recent incident proves that Pakistan continues to circumvent borders with increasing drone activity. The challenge for security agencies dealing with drones is growing, with this instance being the latest in a string of similar sightings in the region:
* Earlier this month, a drone was spotted near the Ratnuchak-Kaluchak military base in Jammu.
* In February of last year, police announced a reward of 3 lakh to anyone providing information about sightings of a drone that leads to the recovery of dropped material.
* In December of last year, four Pakistani drones were spotted in the Kanachak sector of Jammu and were suspected of conducting a surveillance mission.
This problem is not restricted to India. The first nine months of 2023 saw a drastic rise in the number of drones spotted on the border of England and France. Just last month, a drone nearly collided with a commercial aircraft approaching Gatwick Airport, one of the UK's busiest airports.
These sightings demonstrate a growing problem with drones potentially interfering with commercial airspace.
Let's hope that officials can get to the bottom of this rising problem along the LoC.
