#Dreaming Of A Drug-Free Kerala

Through extensive awareness campaigns, counseling, and essential services, the Drug Rehabilitation Education and Mentoring Project (DREAM) in India empowers thousands of young people in ten districts of Kerala. Since its debut in November 2021, the initiative has served as a beacon of hope for vulnerable communities in the state, as it focuses on fighting drug abuse and providing rehabilitation services.

On Thursday, an impact study report on the project was released at the Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram. The event was attended by Fr. Shalbin Kalanchery, vice provincial of the Salesian Province of Bangalore, and other important guests. The study, carried out by the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences in Kalamassery, was released to the Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala.

Speaking at the event, Fr. Kalanchery highlighted the importance of empowering youth, and Fr. P. S. George, executive director of BREADS, emphasized the need for a collective effort by society to combat drug abuse. The DREAM Project continues to inspire hope and resilience, proving that strategic collaboration and unwavering dedication can transform lives and communities.

Since education is a core focus of Salesian programs in India, many of their primary and secondary educational institutions help young people gain the skills needed to pursue further education and vocational training. In addition, the organization works to meet the basic needs of at-risk youth and their families, such as access to shelter, proper nutrition, and medical care.

The DREAM project is a milestone in Keralas fight against drug abuse, and its success will hopefully inspire similar initiatives across the country to empower youth and build a brighter future for India.
