NDLEA Battles Drug Trafficking with New Forensics Labs

NDLEA adds two new forensic labs to boost drug case prosecution

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expanded its war on drug trafficking and trafficking with the addition of two new forensic laboratories in Abuja and Enugu. In a statement issued by NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr. Femi Babafemi, on Monday, NDLEA chair Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) said the new labs would boost accessibility and speed up forensic analysis, crucial to prosecuting drug-related cases.

Marwa said the agency had been relying on a single laboratory in Lagos for over 25 years but that the establishment of two more labs became necessary due to a recent surge in drug seizures. The new laboratories, positioned in strategic locations and equipped with cutting-edge technology, will enhance the agency's forensic analysis capabilities. The existing laboratory in Lagos has also undergone comprehensive renovation and refurbishment to transform it into a state-of-the-art facility.

Marwa commended the officers, men, and women of the agency's Directorate of Forensic and Chemical Monitoring for their work and pledged to equip the laboratories with the necessary tools and expertise to ensure accurate and reliable forensic analysis and tackle the challenges posed by emerging New Psychoactive Substances (NPS). The US International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) has donated new advanced equipment to the agency to enhance the operations of the NDLEA forensic laboratory in Lagos.

Marwa added that the handover of the spectroscopy device was done by the Director of INL in Nigeria, Ms. Candace Spradley, who commended the collaboration between NDLEA and the INL. This new equipment will enhance the agency's capacity to detect and analyze suspicious substances.
