Authorities have issued a warning to consumers about a brand of honey, 'Royal Honey', which has been found to contain an active drug ingredient, following numerous reports of adverse side effects. The product is alleged to have been manufactured by Holy Natural Products and is suspected to contain the controlled substance, cathinone.
The substance is classified as a stimulant and can induce feelings of euphoria, alertness, and anxiety suppression. Common side effects include insomnia, heart arrhythmia, anxiety, and hypertension. It is feared that the product has already reached many consumers and the possible health risks this might cause.
An official from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said, "Due to the severity of the potential side effects of this substance, we are taking this product off the shelves and alerting the public immediately."
It is not clear how the drug substance has made its way into the honey and the official warned that "further investigation is needed to determine the source of the contamination and to ensure that all contaminated products are removed from distribution."
The FDA is currently working with the retailer, Food Plus Supermarket, to remove the product and will be conducting a further investigation.
It is expected that officials will make a further statement shortly.
