Airport security dog bites child, forcing family to cancel Malaysia trip

A four-year-old suffered injuries after a security sniffer dog suddenly bit him at Kolkata airport. The incident forced the family to cancel their trip to Malaysia for rabies treatment and filing a police complaint a week later. The handler of the German Shepherd has been charged for negligence.

The boy was bitten by the supposedly leashed dog near the departure gates of the airport on August 12. The boy's family was accompanied by the animal's handler, who was holding the leash when the dog pounced. The severity of the bite necessitated rabies treatment, leading the family to cancel their travel plans.

The incident raises questions about airport security and animal handling protocols. This predicament occurred just as the nation's highest court modified its capture order for stray dogs.

According to the boy's father, who filed a complaint with the police, the family decided to cancel the trip to receive the rabies vaccination, which needed a month-long course of treatment.

The case has since been filed, and investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, officials are reviewing how such an incident could occur despite the dog's handler being present.

The incident has raised concerns about the handling of security animals, and authorities are investigating whether there were any negligence or breaches.

"An FIR has been registered against the handler for his inability to control the dog, which caused severe injury. Such a predicament, right when the family was about to leave, led them to cancel their trip to Malaysia," the officer added.
