UAE strengthens anti-narcotics efforts with new Authority

The UAE has taken a significant step to enhance its anti-narcotics initiatives through the establishment of a new authority. The National Anti-Narcotics Authority (NANA), led by Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, will serve as an independent, direct reporting body to the UAE Cabinet as a means of consolidating efforts to counteract drug-related crimes. This will ensure the Authority works cohesively and efficiently with federal and local agencies in crafting and implementing policies and strategies to prevent and mitigate drug-related activities in the country.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President, has issued a federal decree-law to establish NANA, which will assume the responsibilities of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at the Ministry of Interior. This comes as a part of the UAE's vision to create a robust legislative framework and operational system to combat drug-related threats effectively.

NANA will be responsible for creating and implementing policies, legislation, and strategies to fight narcotics. This will include collaborating with relevant agencies at federal and local levels to dismantle smuggling and distribution networks.

As part of its operational scope, the authority will monitor land, sea, and air entry points in collaboration with national entities to prevent the entry or exit of narcotic substances. It will track and inspect individuals, goods, and vehicles, with the aim of curbing illicit activities at the country's borders.

NANA will also establish and manage a centralised national database accessible to all federal and local bodies involved in anti-narcotics operations. This system will facilitate real-time information sharing, coordinated responses, and improved decision-making.

This move reflects the UAE's commitment to ensuring a safe and stable society for its residents and visitors and further strengthening its global reputation as a world-leading nation.
