An ongoing challenge for Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir is the persistent threat from Pakistani drones. These drones are used to spy on Indian territory and drop weapons and narcotics across the Line of Control (LoC). This situation has now reached a point where the Indian authorities are offering cash rewards for information on drone activities.
In the latest incident, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district initiated a large-scale search operation after witnessing multiple drones flying over forward areas along the LoC. According to officials, the drones were spotted flying at high altitude over Balakote, Langote, and Gursai Nallah. Approximately six drones were seen flying from the Pakistani side, and while they dropped no payloads during this encounter, the Indian authorities are concerned that they may have been surveying drop points for future missions.
This is not the first such incident in recent months in Jammu and Kashmir, and officials have noted that heightened vigilance and continuous monitoring are necessary to counter these drone threats. Pakistan has used drone technology for surveillance purposes before, as well as delivering payloads including weapons and drugs in October 2022 and prior to that in August 2022 and February 2021.
Officials have warned that the situation highlights the evolving methods used by Pakistani intelligence agencies to create disorder and unrest in the region. The matter is of such concern that the Indian police announced a reward of 3 lakh for information leading to the recovery of material dropped by similar drones.
