A recent investigation by the Travis County Sherriffs Office has revealed years of serious policy violations by a former detective, Tyler Akin. Despite having committed these malfeasances for six years, the alleged misconduct remained hidden from sheriffs office leaders until five months ago.
The revelations indicate that Akin failed to document 70% of the traffic stops he conducted between 2019 and 2025. Additionally, a specific incident dating back to November 22, 2023, showed that Akin took possession of illegal items discovered during a search without logging or reporting them.
Criminal defense attorneys and justice advocates have since called for a comprehensive review of the sheriff's office to determine whether any other employees have engaged in similar misconduct. Despite the concerns, office spokesperson Kristen Dark noted that no complaints have been submitted against Akin requiring a review of his work prior to 2019.
Travis County District Attorneys Office spokesperson Ismael Martinez stated that prosecutors will refer the case to an outside agency for review. The matter remains under investigation.
