BSF apprehends senior Bangladeshi Police officer infiltrating India

A senior officer in the Bangladeshi Police was apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday evening while attempting to illegally cross the Indian territory in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. The identity of the infiltrator was not released to the public to respect the ongoing investigation. Officials reported that the arrest occurred between 6 pm and 7 pm near the Hakimpur Border Outpost.

Official sources spoke to ANI and stated that the officer was intercepted by BSF troops during routine patrolling. Upon searching him, identity documents confirming his position as a senior officer of the Bangladeshi Police were found. The official sources also stated that this was a rare occasion for such an infiltration attempt. Given the sensitivity of the Indian-Bangladesh border, which stretches 4096 km, and the arrest of a serving Bangladeshi police officer raises concerns about the reasons behind the illegal crossing and whether he was acting on behalf of a larger network.

Officials stated that the Hakimpur Border Outpost has remained vulnerable in the past, due to its terrain, dense population, and proximity to urban centres and has been exploited by organised groups, smugglers, and touts. The BSF plays a critical role in preventing illegal immigration, trafficking, and smuggling of contraband. This arrest highlights the importance of constant vigilance by security agencies on the border. Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the reasons behind his infiltration.
