Horrific Torture Devices Found in Israeli Courthouse Highlight Ongoing Impunity and Lack of Accountability

A terrifying glimpse into Israel's abusive judiciary and its victims.

Last week, the Organization for Defending Victims of Violence, alongside International Council Supporting Fair Trial and Human Rights and the Khiam Rehabilitation Center, submitted a statement to the UN Human Rights Council. Their key demand: prompt, impartial, and effective investigations into allegations of torture by the Israeli army. This comes after a victim's relative took photographs of military courtrooms, exposing the methods used to torture Palestinian children. The organizations believe that these photos reveal horrific torture devices, hidden in plain sight, illustrating pervasive impunity and lack of accountability.

One of the images reveals a cage used to detain minors during proceedings. The UNODC definitions of torture specify that such devices are designed to induce mental as well as physical suffering. The relative, anonymously, states that this cage is intentionally small, cramped, and windowless. It is used during interrogation as well as throughout the entire duration of the court proceedings, with the aim of further intimidating and psychologically damaging the child.

The organizations hope the photos will help to finally spark long-overdue action. The submission urges the Council to demand Israel uphold the rights of victims and ensure justice is served.

Sadly, this comes as no surprise. Over the years, the Israeli military has repeatedly been accused of abusing Palestinian children. The Israeli army has been accused of forcing confessions through torture. This includes beating victims until they are unrecognizable, shackling them in stress positions for hours, and subjecting them to loud music and sleep deprivation. These methods often lead to severe, long-term psychological trauma.

The organizations hope this submission encourages the Council to push for comprehensive, ongoing monitoring of torture allegations and effective interventions by relevant UN entities.

Furthermore, they urge the Council to press Israel to allow UN officials, including the Special Rapporteurs on torture and counter-terrorism, as well as the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, unimpeded access to communicate with all persons, including children, who are suspected of being victims of torture.

The statement is a chilling reminder that effective action needs to be taken to ensure abused minors can have a fair trial and heal from their experiences.

This exposure of torture methodologies brings us one step closer to shedding light on Israel's abusive judiciary and ensuring justice and accountability for the victims.
