After a missing person report six years ago, Elathur Police in Kozhikode have booked three friends of the missing man on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
According to police, the friends buried the body after the man died from a drug overdose.
Police arrested two of the three friends, 39-year-old KK Nikhil of Eranhipalam and 37-year-old Deepesh of Vengeri, in connection with the incident. The team is searching for the third accused, Ranjith, aged 31, from Poovattuparamba.
Investigators found that the trio buried Vigil's body in a marshy area at Sarovaram after he died from a drug overdose.
On March 24, 2019, Vigil, 35, left home in the morning for an open ground near Sarovaram Park with his three friends. They injected brown sugar together, and Vigil lost consciousness due to an overdose. The others left the site and returned the next day when Vigil was dead. They buried the body in the marsh and weighed it down with stones.
Police produced Nikhil and Deepesh before the Koyilandy JFCM court, which remanded them in custody. The police intend to take them into custody again for evidence collection. Since Vigil was buried in Sarovaram, the case may be handed over to Nadakkavu Police.
The friends were booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under IPC Sections 304, 201, 297, and 34.
