Narcotics and contraband crackdown: Passengers caught with 2kg cocaine and 1kg gold at Chennai airport

Chennai Customs recently seized 2kg of cocaine worth 20 crore from a Nigerian national, in addition to 1.01kg of gold valued at 1.01 crore from a couple attempting to enter India illegally. These seizures highlight Chennai Customs' success in combating drug and gold smuggling at the city's airport.

The Nigerian national, 36, had arrived on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha, a popular transit point for African smugglers. Customs officials searched her luggage and discovered a false bottom separated by cardboard, beneath which were hidden two black plastic packs containing what proved to be cocaine. This marked a significant breakthrough in Chennai Customs' efforts to curb drug trafficking.

The couple, meanwhile, had arrived on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Upon searching their belongings, officials found a rubbery ball concealed in the husband's shoe, containing gold in paste form, and another cylindrical ball containing gold was seized from the wife.

According to officials, African smugglers frequently choose the Middle East as a transit point to avoid suspicion when trafficking cocaine. In this instance, the Nigerian national was attempting to enter India for the first time, but her handlers have previously trafficked drugs into the country.

The couple, suspected of engaging in gold smuggling, have been remanded in judicial custody alongside the Nigerian national. The seizures of cocaine and gold highlight the ongoing efforts of Chennai Customs to prevent illegal activities at the airport and stop trafficking of contraband.
