The Government of Karnataka has established an anti-narcotics task force (ANTF) to tackle the growing drug menace in Bengaluru.
The state government allocated a budget of 10 crore (1 million) for the task force, which will primarily focus on cracking down on drug trafficking and curbing drug abuse among young people in the city.
The move follows a surge in seizures of narcotics in the city, with police officials seizing more than four kilograms of heroin, MDMA (ecstasy) pills, and cocaine in recent months.
The task force will be comprised of personnel from the police department, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and the revenue department.
It will be equipped with specialized surveillance and investigation techniques to prevent drug trafficking and enforce drug laws more effectively.
The state government has also announced plans to launch a nationwide awareness campaign focused on the harmful effects of drug abuse among young people and the available treatment options.
"The fight against drug abuse is a collaborative effort between various agencies and we must work together to eradicate this problem from the root," said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
"The state government will continue to allocate resources and work hand-in-hand with stakeholders to ensure a drug-free society," he added.
In recent years, Bengaluru has battled rampant substance abuse, with officials seizing contraband worth millions of rupees.
The city's thriving nightlife and party scene, exacerbated by the emergence of various drugs, has led to an upsurge in the drug menace among young people.
The newly formed ANTF is a positive step toward combating drug abuse and helping those affected by this burgeoning social issue in the state.
