Britons on holiday face an alarming risk of ending up in foreign jails when abroad, with over 1,000 of them jailed for drugs offences alone in the past five years, new data reveals.

The situation is set to worsen with the recent decision to downgrade the status of cannabis, a drug that is often illicit abroad but widely available at home.

Over 1,000 Britons were imprisoned abroad for drug-related offences between 2018 and 2022, with Mexico, the Netherlands, and Greece accounting for nearly half of all arrests, according to a freedom of information request made by the Liberal Democrats to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The party obtained data for 19 countries, with the figures suggesting that Britons are particularly at risk of drug-related jail time in popular holiday destinations.

Commenting on the issue, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Alistair Carmichael said: "People who are heading off on holiday should be aware that drug laws are often far stricter abroad, and that they could find themselves in serious trouble if they are caught violating local laws, including potentially ending up in a foreign jail.

"The government needs to do much more to alert people to the risks and ensure that FCDO travel advice is doing the job it should. Thousands of Britons travelling abroad potentially face imprisonment unless the government takes this issue far more seriously."
