Odisha: Collapse at under-construction Cuttack railway station, 1 injured

Witnesses of the tragedy and local authorities describe critical incident and rescue operation.

A massive wall and roof collapse at the under-construction Cuttack railway station in Odisha State, eastern India, has injured one person and caused alarm among local authorities. The 35-year-old security guard, who was trapped under the debris, was in a stable condition in hospital.

Local administrator Rupashree Sahu explained to reporters that the guard had alerted other personnel about vibrations in the walls, indicating a possible collapse. The guard was then evacuated, and a thorough search was conducted to ensure no other personnel were trapped in the rubble.

The accident has been classified as causing "minor damage" and further investigations are ongoing to determine the precise cause of the collapse. Local authorities have described the event as a tragedy and have extended their well-wishes to the victim and their family. The railway station redevelopment project is expected to be completed by 2025.

The state's Minister for Railways, Jagannath Sarkar, has recently allocated an additional 1000 crore rupees to develop the railway network in the state. This funding is expected to be used to accelerate several ongoing projects like the Cuttack railway station redevelopment.
