While new psychoactive substances (NPS) aren't yet a significant problem in Singapore, they remain a major concern for the government, according to Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam.
Speaking on radio segment CNA938, Shanmugam revealed that drug abusers are also getting younger. He urged parents to educate their children about the harms of drug abuse, stressing that pop culture often portrays drug use as glamorous and socially acceptable.
Despite stringent laws and enforcement, Shanmugam acknowledged that Singapore cannot fight the problem alone. Coordinated international efforts are crucial in preventing narcotics from reaching the country, the minister said.
He added that the government would continue to work with its international counterparts to monitor emerging trends and patterns, develop new detection technologies, and raise awareness of the harms of drug abuse.
"We must keep sending the message that drug use is dangerous, and illegal," Shanmugam said. "And as a society, we will not tolerate or accept drug use."
This comes after a recent sting operation in Singapore, which resulted in the arrest of 426 people on suspicion of drug abuse or possession.
