Hyderabad police in Telangana have made a significant dent in the local gold smuggling industry, appregling four key players in the trade. The customs officials seized over a kilogram of gold from the quartet, who have been identified as Mohammed Khaja Mohiuddin, Rayees Ahmed Sayeed Hussain Lanka, Sarim Hussain, and Fouzan. The arrest came after Khaja Mohiuddin returned from the UAE, where he had been lured by a local man named Mustakim who sensed his desperation for money.
Using the lure of quick cash, Mustakim convinced Mohiuddin to smuggle gold into the country, tasking him to find others to help with the mission. Khaja reached out to three other men in Hyderabad, allegedly stuffing 1,000 grams of gold into three capsules and passing them through his rectum. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Chakravarthy Gummi, "he ejected three capsules wg. 1,000 grams from his rectum and he appointed above (3) said persons in Hyderabad."
The trio intended to divide the gold and make a quick profit, but their plans were thwarted by the vigilant police officers. This case is just one among several in recent weeks in Telangana, as customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport booked three passengers for allegedly smuggling in gold worth over Rs. 2 crore just yesterday. Officials intercepted the passengers and recovered seven rectangular-shaped pouches of gold hidden in the pockets of a body shaper belt.
The matters are under further investigation and likely to shed more light on the broader network of gold smugglers operating in the region.
