Since its founding in 1866, Hope College, an institution grounded in a liberal arts education, has been offering specialized education to its students. As a condition for receiving federal funding through Title IV in the form of student financial aid (grants, loans, and work-study programs) and federal research grants, the college is required to certify that it complies with the Drug-Free Schools, and Communities Act (DFSCA) and must prohibit all marijuana use, including medical marijuana, and provide sanctions for its use.

This has led to a number of sanctions and policies being imposed on both students and employees for violating the college's policies and standards of conduct, up to and including termination, and referral for prosecution.

With the recent changes in state laws, it will be interesting to see how these policies are adapted to keep up with the changing times while still adhering to DFSCA.
