Three Nigerian nationals were arrested on drug-smuggling charges after customs officials found thousands of dollars concealed in their underpants and a waistcoat. According to reports, the trio planned to use the illegal money to purchase drugs from an undercover officer.
The incident occurred in the Indian city of Mumbai, where customs officials were conducting routine surveillance when they noticed a Nigerian man named Chukwuemeka Anyanwu arriving at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Anyanwu was acting suspiciously, and authorities decided to search his belongings.
During the search, they found rolls of hidden money worth approximately $6,800 in his underpants and waistcoat. On the same day, two other Nigerian men, John Okorie and Ejike Emmanuel, arrived from Nairobi, Kenya, and were also detained after custom officials found $8000 concealed in their underwear.
All three men were arrested on suspicion of money laundering and later admitted to officials that they planned to use the funds to buy drugs from an undercover officer. The case is just one amongst many highlighting the increasing trend of Nigerian nationals involved in international drug racket.
"These arrests have unveiled a larger web of narcotics trafficking at the airport. We will continue to investigate these cases and ensure that such criminals are brought to justice," said the airport's chief customs officer, Gautam Patel.
This incident sheds light on the innovative tactics and international scope of drug smuggling operations, emphasizing the critical role of customs officials in combating the illegal drug trade.
Let's hope for a speedy trial for these three culprits.
