One of India's most populous states, Bihar, has recently been rocked by multiple instances of teacher-student sexual abuse. In the most recent case, a teacher at a government-run school in the eastern district of Purnia was arrested for allegedly filming sexual videos of a Class 7 student. The teacher is accused of coercing the young student into performing sexual acts on camera, which he then reportedly circulated to students of the same school.
This incident drew attention to the problem of teacher-student sexual abuse in India, where schools often lack proper supervision and monitoring systems, making it easier for perpetrators to exploit young students. This case follows a disturbing trend, as this is just one among many recent incidents in the state of Bihar.
Only last month, a teacher at a government-aided school in the northern district of Begusarai was arrested for allegedly making an obscene video of a Class 11 student. The teacher, a woman in her 20s, allegedly convinced the student, a girl in her teens, to shoot the video for "classwork," promising to help her pursue acting. She then shared the footage with her husband and other classmates.
These incidents highlight the pressing need for educational reform in India. These cases also come against the backdrop of shocking data from the National Crime Records Bureau, which reveals that in 2021, as many as 2,571 children were registered as victims of sexual abuse, accounting for almost 10% of total crimes against children in India.
The suspect in the Purnia case was registered with the help of the girl's family, who filed a complaint against the teacher after they learned of his disgusting actions. The teacher was arrested and charged with violating the POCSO Act.
The incident in Begusarai is also being investigated by local authorities. Both teachers have been dismissed from their posts, and further investigations are ongoing.
These cases highlight the crucial need for better monitoring and regulation within India's schools and education system. The system desperately needs reform to better protect the country's children and prevent such heinous crimes.
It remains to be seen how the authorities will address these incidents and implement much-needed reforms to prevent such abuses in the future.
