Dehradun airport's former senior manager is accused of embezzling Rs 232 crore ($28.5 million) has been arrested, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The criminal investigation agency revealed that its officers detained the former official in Dehradun on Tuesday afternoon. The accused allegedly embezzled the money while working at the Dehradun Airport between 2020 and 2023.
The CBI said it was conducting searches at the suspect's residence and offices in Dehradun and the national capital region in connection with the crime.
The agency alleged that the former airport authority manager connived with officials of the catering department and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to siphon off the money. The suspect routed the funds to various private companies' bank accounts and entered fake invoices and fictitious transactions, the CBI explained.
The CBI further alleged that the embezzled funds were then laundered and used to purchase immovable properties, including a hotel in Haridwar.
The investigation agency said it had recently registered a case against the former airport official and others under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
This is the second major corruption case linked to airport authorities in less than a month. Earlier, the CBI arrested an official of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 ($235) for clearing a tender proposal for a cybersecurity audit at the Lucknow airport.
