Police in Islamabad have arrested five individuals, including a jeweller, for their involvement in a cross-border drug cartel with links to France and Pakistan. The group was found to be using drones to traffic drugs, with confiscated haul totalling 2.25 kg of heroin, Rs 1.05 lakh in drug money, a Glock pistol, and a car.
The arrests come as a result of a joint effort between the Islamabad police teams under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police Harpreet Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh, who nabbed the suspects at a checkpoint near Kabir Park.
The police have identified the kingpin of the racket as Karanbir Singh, who had previously attempted to flee to the US via the dunki route but was deported back to India. Subsequent investigations have revealed that the cartel is operated by a France-based Punjabi NRI along with Pakistan-based associates.
The heroin was sent via drone from Pakistan to border areas and distributed across Amritsar and other regions. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar noted that investigations are still ongoing to establish the full scope of the cartel's activities and networks.
