Elderly Bitcoin Investors Defrauded of Rs 1.15 Crore in Get Rich Quick Scheme

Two senior citizens in Ahmedabad fell victim to a treacherous cyber scam, losing a colossal Rs 1.15 crore through fraudulent stock market and Bitcoin schemes. The duped elderly couples' emotional distress and financial hardship serve as a stark reminder of the perils of online investing, urging heightened vigilance and caution.

The victims, a 65-year-old man and his 62-year-old wife, were approached by the accused, persons unknown, through a text message in August this year. The message touted lucrative profits through investments in shares and Bitcoins a seemingly "get rich quick" scheme.

The elderly couple, hoping to bolster their retirement savings, contacted the senders, who directed them to pay a preliminary amount of Rs. 2.5 lakh towards investment. Believing them to be legitimate, the couple transferred the money to several accounts provided by the fraudsters.

However, soon, the scam emerged, and the perpetrators halted all communication with the victims. Multiple attempts by the couple to contact the accused and obtain their funds proved futile. As a result, the couple, who has since filed a complaint with the Ahmedabad Cyber Police, hopes other senior citizens will learn from their traumatic experience and be extra cautious when approached with seemingly lucrative investment opportunities.

When asked for comments, the investigating officer from the Cyber Police department, said, "The matter is under investigation. We advise people to be extremely cautious with their money and avoid impulsive decisions. Any such investment offering abnormal returns often tends to be a scam targeting unsuspecting victims."

The tragic tale of the elderly couple serves as a cautionary tale for all aspiring investors. Let this be a stark reminder to thoroughly verify the authenticity of any investment opportunity before committing any funds and to report any such fraudulent activities to the appropriate authorities.
