Narcotics Crackdown in Haryana Highlights Growing Enforcement, Lapses in Justice

Despite an intensified narcotics crackdown in Haryana, with steeper arrests and seizures, figures from the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB) reveal a concerning decline in conviction rates. From January to July this year, FIRs registered for narcotics cases rose by 6.87%, while arrests increased by 35.21%. Commercial and intermediate cases witnessed a rise of 12.18% and 31% respectively. Yet, convictions in commercial quantity cases slipped from 72.72% in 2024 to 56.75% this year.

Understanding these discrepancies, HSNCB's Director General O.P. Singh attributes them to technical lapses in compliance and delays. To address these lapses, the HSNCB has intensified training for Investigating Officers, emphasizing specific procedures and swiftness. Singh highlights that the bureau's overall conviction rate is strong, indicating that this slip warrants further review and proactive corrective measures.

Alongside enforcement, the HSNCB is focusing on prevention. In the current calendar year, they have reached over 1.5 lakh people through awareness programs and engaged over 2.8 lakh youth in 4,270 villages through sports initiatives.

As drug enforcement intensifies in Haryana, this shift highlights not only its effectiveness but also the necessity for rigorous adherence to procedures and swift justice.
