Latest India Updates: Registered Post Merged, Spam Calls Cracked Down, and More

Here's a quick round-up of the latest news that will affect your day-to-day life from September 1st onwards. India Post is merging Registered Post with Speed Post, LPG commercial cylinder prices are falling, silver hallmarking is beginning, and TRAI is cracking down on spam calls.

India Post Registered Post to Merge with Speed Post

From September 1st, India Post's Registered Post service will merge with Speed Post. Registered Post articles will be treated as Speed Post articles and delivered accordingly. This means that all posts enrolled in the Registered Post service will now be tracked and delivered within a maximum of 15 days, unlike the optional nature of tracking for Registered Post. India Post says this streamlining is happening to provide customers with a "more efficient, effective, and customer-friendly service."

LPG Cylinder Prices to Fall

Effective from September 1st, commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders will become cheaper by Rs. 103 in Delhi and Rs. 85.50 in Mumbai. The price reduction is due to a recent government decision to reduce the base price of LPG and pass the savings on to consumers. This is the third such price reduction in the last four months.

Silver Hallmarking to Begin

Three new hallmarks will be introduced to denote the purity of silver from September 1st, in line with a government notification. This means that all silver articles will now be marked with a new purity standard, affecting both domestic and imported items. The new hallmarking will read 950, 999, and 999.9, with the number indicating the purity percentage of silver.

TRAI to Crack Down on Spam Calls

In a much-needed relief for Indian mobile users, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is implementing new measures to regulate spam calls and fraudulent SMS messages. Telecom carriers will be required to deploy checks to avoid spamming, and customers will have the option to register for "Do Not Disturb" services to block all unsolicited messages. Repeat offenders could face a legal penalty of up to Rs. 500 crore.

These new rules signal a wave of progress in streamlining services and protecting consumers in India.
