The Wheeling Police Department has a new member on its K-9 unit, and he's fetching attention.
They've added a two-year-old Belgian Malinois named Sheik to their team. Sheik is trained in narcotics detection and suspect pursuit and apprehension.
Sheik joins three other K-9s on the force, including Jericho and Vigil, who are also trained in narcotics detection, and Ozzy, who specializes in explosive detection.
Patrolman First Class Brandon Stanley, who handles Sheik, expressed his excitement about the new partnership and recounted how supportive the police chief was when Stanley expressed an interest in working with a K-9 partner.
The Wheeling Police Department funded Sheik through the city's West Virginia opioid settlement funds.
This new chapter allows for a brighter and more productive future in public safety for the city of Wheeling and its residents.
