A young woman in Bengaluru ended her life by suicide, fearing continued harassment by her husband and in-laws for additional dowry and his extramarital affair. The tragic incident has once again brought attention to the harsh realities of harassment and discrimination still faced by many Indian women.
Poojashree, just 31, hanged herself from the ceiling at her home in Hulimavu last week. Her mother, who lives in Chennai, alleged that her daughter was constantly tortured and threatened for money and her husband Nandeesh's affair.
Poojashree's family, outraged and heartbroken, claim they paid INR 200,000 as dowry three years ago. Relatives say that Poojashree had visited Chennai six months after her marriage in 2019 and told them that she was subjected to mental and physical harassment over dowry demands. After that trip, her parents had sought the help of a mediator, who assured them that things would improve.
Unfortunately, Poojashree's situation only got worse. Nandeesh, who works as a driver, would constantly abuse his wife and demand more money. Reports indicate that he was also having an affair.
Poojashree's mother said that her daughter had visited the mediator's home just a day before her death, crying and feeling terrified. She had hoped that her husband would change his ways after their recent relocation to Bengaluru from Mysuru.
Sadly, nothing could convince Nandeesh and his family to stop their harassment. On the morning of her death, Poojashree sent a message to her mother, saying, "I love you mum," as if she sensed something tragic was about to happen to her.
Poojashree's death is a painful reminder of the critical work needed to change ingrained attitudes and empower women facing domestic abuse.
