Singapore's Seafood Export Potential

Singapore and India discuss potential for Indian seafood in Singapore, with a focus on sustainability

Singapore has developed expertise in the area of sustainable fishing and seafood production. Last month, Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal stated that Singapore was one of the largest markets for Indian seafood exports, valued at US$250 million annually, with expectations to grow further.

According to Goyal, Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed interest in importing seafood products from India when the two met last week during the latter's official visit to Singapore. Goyal stated that he will arrange for a business delegation of seafood importers to visit Singapore.

Indian seafood exports to Singapore include a wide variety of products such as shrimps, prawns, lobster, tuna, and other seafood products. Recently, Indian seafood exporters have been facing issues in Singapore due to the COVID-19 pandemic and container shortages.

Wong's visit to India is significant as it marks the first prime ministerial visit between the two countries since 2004. Singapore and India have long enjoyed strong bilateral ties, and these discussions highlight the potential for sustainable economic growth and trade between the two nations.
