16 people have been arrested and $55 million worth of cannabis has been seized in a recent drug bust in Simcoe, Ontario. The Ontario Provincial Police Simcoe confirmed that the bust occurred on July 16 at a greenhouse on Highway 3 in Haldimand County. Officers seized over 107,000 illegal cannabis plants and approximately 950 pounds of dried illegal cannabis buds. The street value of these seizures is estimated to be over $55 million. Police also seized grow lights, machinery, and other cannabis processing equipment, which were allegedly being used for illegal operations.
As a result of the bust, 16 individuals have faced a total of 32 charges. The charges include cultivating cannabis without authorization and possession for the purpose of distribution, both of which are violations of the Cannabis Act. Police have not disclosed the identities of the individuals involved.
The Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team was investigating the alleged illegal operations. The team has not disclosed details of the investigation or whether there are any ongoing investigations related to this bust.
This seizure and subsequent arrests are significant in deterring illegal cannabis operations across the province, said the OPP in a statement regarding the bust. Any illicit drug operation hurts communities and often attracts organized crime and violence. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to uphold the law and ensure the safety of our communities.
