As lakhs bid farewell to Lord Ganesha across Maharashtra, Ganpati Visarjan in Pune turned into a massive celebration with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's surprise visit. Playing the dhol, the politician joined in the dancing and performed Anant Chaturthi pooja, marking the end of the 10-day Ganpati festival.
The festival held special significance this year, as lockdowns and pandemic restrictions led to stricter protocols for celebrating Ganesha Chaturthi. Many opted to install eco-friendly clay idols, and the crowd at Visarjans (the ceremony to bid farewell to the idol) was thinner than in pre-pandemic times.
But Ajit Pawar's unexpected arrival at Ganpati Visarjan brought Diwali cheer to Puneites. The former deputy chief minister, who suddenly shifted his political allegiance to form a government with BJP and was eventually ousted, was welcomed back with cheering and chanting of his name.
Playing the dhol, he danced alongside the crowd and performed the traditional pooja before joining the procession towards the river.
Only time will tell if this displays a thaw in relations between the BJP and Pawar senior's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). But one thing's for sure: this year's Ganpati Visarjan will be hard to top!
The massive gathering, lively atmosphere, and cheerful vibes truly made it a Diwali cracker of an event.
