What would you do if you were faced with the toughest challenge of your life? This couple from Jharkhand sold their newborn for Rs 50,000, struggling to pay off their debts accrued for the birth of the child. But it was a lucky baby who was bought by a kind-hearted woman working in a government department, and immediately reported the matter to the police, and the child was ultimately rescued by the police with the special attention and intervention of the Chief Minister.
In a heartbreaking incident coming out of Jharkhand, a poor couple has become talk of the town for selling their one-month-old baby to pay off their debts. The shocking incident came to light after the child was rescued by the police with the special intervention of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The police took the child into their custody and produced him in front of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on July 22. The CWC member advocate Monika Kumari filed a petition in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM), Anshuman Kumar, for the custody of the child.
After producing the child in court, the police told the media that the accused couple have been identified as Pradeep Kumar, a daily wager from Pakur district, and his wife Kalawati, a domestic help in Ranchi. The couple has been married for seven years now and have two children - Mahi (5) and Pakhi (3). They owe Rs 60,000 to Kalawati's brother-in-law, who helped them arrange the money for Mahi's treatment.
Faced with mounting debt and no means to pay it back, the couple decided to sell their child, Ashish, for Rs 50,000 to Vijay Kumar, an employee of the rural development department. Fortunately, the buyer, Kumar, has a kind heart and reported the matter to the police, and helped save the child's life. The police have registered a case against the couple under sections 317 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code.
