Man Sterilised Without Consent, Claim's He Was Tricked With Promise of Rs. 4,000

A man from Sabarkantha district of Gujarat alleged that he was tricked by the state government into sterilisation and then cheated of the money promised as incentive, prompting the administration to deny the charges as false.

The man, Saidabad Shaikh, a daily wage worker, said he was approached by an anganwadi worker and a doctor who promised him Rs 4,000 and food grains if he agreed to undergo sterilisation, a claim the state administration has refuted. Mr Shaikh, 28, said he was disoriented when he awoke from the surgery, and found himself in a different room than before, adding that he was not given any form to sign, nor given any sort of advisory about the surgery, according to The Times of India.

He said, "They forged my signature on the form and operated on me. I have become handicapped due to their negligence. They did this to many others too." Shaikh's allegation comes amid concerns over unethical methods employed by health workers to meet rising demand for sterilisation surgeries in Gujarat.

The Gujarat State Health Department issued a statement refuting Mr Shaikh's claims, saying that he had voluntarily chosen to undergo sterilisation in 2017, and that all procedures were conducted with his consent, adding that he received proper post-operative care.

The department called the latest allegations "false and motivated".

The district's chief medical officer Dr H M Patel said an internal inquiry would be conducted.

This isn't the first time such allegation has been made against the government. Eight men filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court in 2018, saying they were duped into undergoing sterilisation surgeries. Several others have also made similar claims in the past.
