The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has denied any involvement in stopping the Indian National Congress (INC) from sending a link to a video on allegations of voter fraud in Maharashtra.
The INC alleged that they were stopped from sending the video link to voters via SMS messages. In a statement, TRAI said that service providers are only responsible for the transmission of bulk SMS messages and that they play no role in approving their content. They added that complaints about the alleged infringement of the rights of SMS recipients could be investigated only if the recipient of the SMS files the complaint themselves.
TRAI's response comes after INC officials filed a complaint with the authorities earlier this week. INC officials argued that the SMS messages were crucial for combating misinformation ahead of the upcoming elections.
In a separate response, a TRAI official said that the authority has already advised SMS aggregators and service providers to be mindful of the content of the SMS messages and to take proactive steps to ensure that their users do not receive such SMS messages that contain misinformation.
The official statement from TRAI marks the end of a tumultuous few weeks over allegations of voter fraud and political jockeying in Maharashtra.
