By 2024, the world will be gathering in Berlin, aiming to further strengthen commitments to climate action. This came at the end of the first segment of the UN Climate Technology Summit 2021, which concluded on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

The summit was organized to accelerate actions to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and sustainable development goals (SDGs). Hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the summit was held during June 23-24, bringing together leaders and stakeholders from various sectors to spotlight game-changing technologies, initiatives, and commitments to combat climate change.

UNEP's Executive Director, Inger Andersen, highlighted the importance of the summit. "We have a breakthrough at the UN Climate Technology Summit. Several countries have announced they are backing the mission-oriented innovation collaborations to deploy new technologies to bring down emissions and adapt to climate impacts," said Andersen.

Among the notable outcomes of the summit was Germany's announcement of its plan to accelerate its coal phase-out by 2030, five years earlier than expected. Indonesia also announced that it would make the transition to 100% renewable energy by 2040. In addition, the United States, the European Union, and a host of other countries have outlined new commitments to accelerate the development and deployment of innovative climate technologies.

As part of the summit, the Innovation Collaboration was launched to catalyze clean energy transitions and sustainable systems through mission-oriented innovation, bringing together over 30 developing and developed countries, including the US, China, India, and members of the European Union.

These collaborations are designed to accelerate transformative climate technologies to market and scale in the short term. Each collaboration's objectives and goals are unique, but they are all designed to address interconnected challenges affecting climate, health, and the environment, and to connect actors across the entire value chain to catalyze market opportunities.

The collaborations cover a range of sectors and challenges and focus on accelerating the development and deployment of innovative climate technologies. These include advanced batteries for renewable energy storage; hydrogen as an important source of clean energy; sustainable and resilient urban ecosystems; and technologies to reduce CO2 emissions from heavy industry and transport.

The summit has put the spotlight on the need for accelerated action towards achieving climate goals. With the eyes of the world now turned towards Berlin, the summit has unleashed a momentum that could pave the way for more ambitious commitments and concrete actions for climate technology innovation worldwide.

The stage is set for these crucial steps to protect our planet and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
